Quantifying Beliefs by Belief Functions: An Axiomatic Justification

چکیده

We present a set of axioms that justify the use of belief functions to quantify the beliefs held by an agent Y at time t and based on Y's evidential corpus. It is essentially postulated that degrees of belief are quantified by a function in [0,1] that give the same degrees of beliefs to subsets that represent the same propositions according to Y's evidential corpus. We derive the impact of the coarsening and the refinement of the frame on which the beliefs are expressed. The conditioning process is also derived. We propose a closure axiom that asserts that any measure of beliefs can be derived from other measures of beliefs defined on less specific frames.

The Axiomatic Justification of the Transferable Belief Model

Belief functions have recently been advocated as an alternative to probability functions for representing quantified belief. This new normative model has several merits, but these merits are not sufficient to justify its use. Some ‘axiomatic’ justification is also needed. Indeed the examination of the requirements that underlie the normative models of subjective behaviors provides usually the b...

Showing why measures of quantified beliefs are belief functions

In [8, 10], we present an axiomatic justification for the fact that quantified beliefs should be represented by belief functions. We show that the mathematical function that can represent quantified beliefs should be a Choquet capacity monotone of order 2. In order to show that it must be monotone of order infinite, thus a belief function, we propose several extra rationality requirements. One ...

The Normative Representation of Quantified Beliefs by Belief Functions

The use of belief functions has recently been advocated as an alternative to the use of probability functions in order to represent quantified beliefs. Such a proposal lacked justification. We present a set of requirements that justify the use of belief functions. The assessment of the validity of these requirements provides a tool for assessing the relative value of normative models of subject...

Rejoinder on "Likelihood-based belief function: Justification and some extensions to low-quality data"

This note is a rejoinder to comments by Dubois and Moral about my paper “Likelihood-based belief function: justification and some extensions to low-quality data” published in this issue. The main comments concern (1) the axiomatic justification for defining a consonant belief function in the parameter space from the likelihood function and (2) the Bayesian treatment of statistical inference fro...

The transferable belief model and random sets

1) Quantified beliefs are point-valued, not interval-valued 2) Any connection with randomization or necessary additivity as encountered within probability theory has been explicitly eliminated. 3) A difference has been established between open and closed world assumptions (Smets 1988). The normalization after conditioning and combination is not performed in the open world context. 4) A two-leve...
